In South Carolina, officials who referee high school basketball are part of an organization called the South Carolina Basketball Officials Association (SCBOA).  This organization is affiliated with the SC High School League (SCHSL) office in Columbia. There are twelve sub-groups throughout the state (called districts), which are responsible for the training and education of officials that live within their geographic borders as well as scheduling of games on the sub-varsity level, pre-season and holiday tournament games, scrimmages and jamborees.

The mission of the SCBOA is to provide for the training and development of basketball officials in South Carolina.

All varsity level games (except those affiliated with any of the below listed events) are scheduled by the SCHSL using a web-based scheduling tool called ArbiterSports, whereas sub-varsity, pre-season, holiday tournament, scrimmages, and jamborees are scheduled by the local districts.

The SCHSL utilizes an officials rating system to determine game assignments and it consists of five different categories:
  • Written Examination
  • SCBOA Experience
  • Officials Peer Rating
  • Attendance at Clinics, Exam, and Training
  • Cooperation with the Local District
